Twine CEO discusses Twine 1.0 release

23.10.2008

Will there be some type of freemium model to allow those who want to opt out to do so for a fee or subscription price?

For those who don't want this, we may have a possible pro option later if the demand is there. We really do think that the sponsored content will be extremely relevant and done in a polite way. You can mark that you aren't interested in a topic.

Some users may balk at the idea of Twine using their data to assist marketers, especially after Facebook's misstep with Beacon. How do you feel Twine's marketing will be different, and preserve users' privacy?

We thought a lot about Beacon, and our approach was designed to be quite different. Beacon was looking at a social dispersion effect. The problem is that it's embarrassing to some people. You should be able to choose to show people whatever data you are comfortable with, and we are very focused on user privacy. Our model is 1:1 marketing, and the user is never identified, nor is any of their data made public. It's the opposite of something like Beacon. The object is to show you what YOU might be interested in.

Twine is not focused on social networking; it's focused on interest networking, and if you want people to feel comfortable sharing their information, you have to assure them that you aren't going to abuse their sharing of interests.
