Technology race

Sunny Lee on his new position with the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

CWHK: What immediate differences have you noticed since your move from Towngas to the Jockey Club?

Sunny Lee: It's a big change. I started my IT management career at Bank of America which had a very structured matrix-type setup with a lot of centralized and standardized systems across various locations. The organization was big [around 35 branches] but not significant in a local sense--unlike the Jockey Club.

Then I moved to Towngas, which is a very locally-focused company and there I was able to initiate some business process re-engineering and work in the operational side of the business. That was my first chance to really [occupy] a CIO role.

Here at the Jockey Club, the technology role is much more expansive and far-reaching. As a result I've had to do a vast amount of learning about the organization and how IT is leveraged by the various operations here. I think many people, like me, may be unaware of the breadth of [our] operations.

CWHK: Give us some examples of how your role here will be different from your role at Towngas.
