The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) conducted raids in three computer stores in the province of Cebu yielding seized items approximately worth P2 million (US$40,000).

These are Fast Win Trading Inc. (or Fast Win Computer Enterprises ) located in Mandaue City and Maxsaver Trading and Byte Circuits Computer Services both located in Cebu City.

Said establishments are believed to be involved in the illegal reproduction and sale of pirated software programs, according to a statement from the Philippine Anti-Piracy Team. The raid was conducted by virtue of the search warrants issued by the Cebu Regional Trial Court Branch 11.

Items used in the suspected illegal reproduction of software programs, including several computers and pirated CD-ROM installers, along with various versions and editions of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office applications, were confiscated during the raid.

'These stores were infringing on the rights of intellectual property owners and are profiting from these unlawful acts and, at the same time, were cheating on their customers,' said Attorney Jose Justo Yap, Division Chief of NBI-IPRD.

Criminal charges for violation of the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines are being prepared against respective owners of the three establishments. The said violation is subject to penalties of up to nine years imprisonment and a fine of up to P1.5 million.
