Monochrome Laser Printers Compared

Features

The Brother HL-2150N and the Samsung ML-2571N are the only printers with LAN support (the letter 'n' in the model number usually indicates network capability). If you are using a printer in a workgroup it makes good sense to have this feature as otherwise, you will need to keep the PC the printer is connected to running for people to use it. Also, its physical location will be tied down to the location of that PC. Network connectivity solves these problems.

The two Brother printers are the only ones offering driver support for both Linux and Mac OSes (apart from of course, Windows). HP only has support for Mac, while the two Canons and the Xerox support only Linux.

Green seems to be on pretty much every manufacturers' minds -- the maximum power consumption in this comparison in idle / standby mode is rated at a mere 10 watts with Xerox Phaser 3117. The most efficient of the lot are the two Canons rated at 2W, followed closely by the two HPs -- the P1007 rated at 3W and the P1505 at 3.9W.

All these printers have a manual feed slot (for printing cards, envelopes, etc) except the HP Laserjet P1007. None of these printers feature an auto duplexer (automatically printing on both sides of the paper). However, manual duplex (where human intervention is required to take the prints from the output bin and place it into the input tray) is present on all except again, the Canons and the Xerox. It is a rather obvious omission by the two manufacturers as this feature not only helps save paper but also makes booklet printing easier.
