IT fuels new Hong Kong long-haul air airline

CWHK: What's your wish list as a CIO (chief information officer) for an airline?

MW: I wish to have 48 hours a day, so I could get done all I need and would like to do.

But seriously, I wish the industry players would open up more aggressively to new industry standards, which are cheaper and more efficient to operate than the old legacy standards.

Within the industry, there are a few emerging standards, like OTA-XML, which is used in distribution systems. It is proven to be mature and beneficial in the hospitality industry. It's fair to say that in the aviation industry it's basically nonexistent. We are ready for OTA-XML on day one, but it's not widely adopted in the industry, so it's very difficult to build integration with other distribution channels like online travel portals or vertical search engines.

Pioneers like us always pay a price for the innovations we are undertaking, because we basically have to support the "old" way while establishing and promoting the "new" way. We've chosen our partner Radixx as it is one of the very few hi-tech suppliers that are able to integrate the best of both worlds in the aviation industry. I wish the industry would wake up and endorse emerging standards to generate new efficiencies and create a better life for everyone.
