Yahoo gives Singapore students prizes for widgets

24.10.2008
Internet search engine firm Yahoo has presented awards to students from four local educational institutions, for developing mobile widgets deemed creative and useful. Widgets are small software applications designed to perform a specific function.

Four student teams from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Nanyang Polytechnic (NP), Singapore Polytechnic (SP) and Temasek Polytechnic (TP) received cash prizes for mobile widgets they developed as entries to Yahoo's inaugural mobile developer awards. The widgets were created using Yahoo's latest mobile development platform, named Yahoo Blueprint.

Tan Geok Leng, chief technology officer, Infocomm Development of Singapore (IDA), commended the winning entries, saying the Singapore market, with its high mobile penetration rate of 135 per cent, was an ideal testbed for mobile applications.
