Worldspan taps IBM hardware for distribution system

Lauderdale said the new IBM mainframes are twice as fast as the earlier units. They're also smaller.

"We're able to get more workload into fewer devices and with greater reliability because of IBM's integrated services like security, encryption redundancy and automatic failover," he said. "The mainframes are already in place, and now we're in the process of replacing the databases and the disk drives."

That work will continue through the first quarter of 2007.
