Sun reports 44 percent growth in Russia

Sun Microsystems reported 44 percent sales growth in Russia for the 2006 fiscal year ended June 30. This time the company reached the highest growth rate over the last five years. Sun said its business development in Russia was mainly lead by new accounts in the public sector, telecommunications, financial and production verticals.

Jean-Paul Bergmans who's been responsible for Sun's operations in Russia over the last two years has been appointed Sun Microsystems president for the SEE region which includes Southern and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa to replace Denis Heraud currently responsible for Asia-Pacific region.

The overall share of CIS countries (Russia plus ex-Soviet republics) in the SSE region sales has risen to 19 percent.

Servers and storage became the company's fastest growing product segments in the country. According to IDC Russia, in the second quarter, 2006, Sun held 49 percent market share for Unix server market in money terms and 77 percent in terms of units shipped, compared to 34 percent and 51 percent share respectively in the worldwide market.

The company also claimed to have boosted its AMD Opteron processor based server sales in Russia.

In fiscal 2006, services business doubled compared to the previous year. The number of Sun certified service engineers has reached 120. The company's got authorized service partners in 17 Russian regions as well as in Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine.
