Telkom South Africa's pan-African data provider, iWay Africa, has completed the integration of AFSAT Communications Uganda and Africa Online Uganda in a move to form one of the continent's largest communications technology companies.

AFSAT and Africa Online Uganda, which provide VSAT and WiMAX services, respectively, belonged to MWEB Africa, which was taken over by Telkom in 2009. AFSAT was Africa's largest VSAT operator while Africa Online was one of the first pan-African ISPs.

The Merger of the Kenyan units of AFSAT and Africa Online was completed early in the year. IWay Africa is currently finalizing integration of these units in a number of other African countries.

WiMAX operator Africa Online currently has operations in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Namibia. AFSAT has operations in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Nigeria. Additional distributors of its VSAT platform are located elsewhere in the remainder of sub-Saharan Africa.

Ken Mwai, the iWay Africa Uganda general manager ,said the move is expected to result in better and low-cost internet services offered by the company. Integration of the companies will also help accelerate the company's offerings across corporate IT services, he said

"Uganda, and Africa in general are on the way to development, and ICTs are a key component in driving especially the business sector which facilitates proper and effective tax systems, modern banking, and other sectors that are affected by the changes in technology," Mwai said.
