Interestingly, Portland is one of the cities in which Google Places has tested its near-field communications program--offering to businesses so that Android-equipped shoppers can complete their purchases or grab offers with a wave of their smartphone. Despite the crowded field, Google's well-stocked bag of tricks and huge user base may allow it to prevail.
