Surfers will find faster wireless speeds on the beach after Optus turned on 4G in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane's CBD.

Optus activated 4G at four sites in Surfers Paradise, and plans to switch on additional sites in the area this December.

Optus plans to switch on five 4G sites in Brisbane next week "in selected areas of the CBD". The telco said it will roll out 4G to the rest of the city in December and January.

The Gold Coast and Brisbane rollout is six months ahead of schedule, said Optus managing director of networks Günther Ottendorfer.

"For customers using our 3G services, they will be pleased to know that Optus will continue to deliver stronger 3G performance, with further upgrades and new sites planned across south-east Queensland over the next 12 months," he added.

The 4G announcement follows rollouts in Melbourne in September, Sydney and Perth in July and Newcastle in April.
