Australian state refreshes Web site

Multimedia Victoria in Australia has begun a complete Web site refresh project for the portal Victoria online (www.vic.gov.au), with the entire project slated to last around six months.

According to Multimedia Victoria CTO Tony Aitkenhead, the site has seen steady growth since 2002 and as a result needs to be tweaked to better meet demands of visitors.

Aitkenhead said focus groups were consulted before the refresh which found the public wanted quick links for popular subjects, fly-out menus and "better use of real estate".

"If, on a regular basis, we do not continually align how our users interface with our visitors' needs we stand the risk of becoming less relevant over time," he said.

"As we improve the interface there will also be a few back-end changes."

Currently, Victoria Online is based on software called CiTR Accesspoint and changes to the user interface are intricately tied back to the back end Web platform.
