2007: Ahead of the curve

14.12.2006
There were seismic shifts in the IT landscape during 2006. It was deja vu as dotcom stocks soared and the phrase "Web 2.0" hit the layman's lexicon. The open source saga twisted further when Oracle decided to undercut RedHat's Linux support prices, quickly followed by the unlikely (and uneasy) pairing of Novell and Microsoft in the OSS space. Look for our BackPage columnist Ric Shreves to follow the open source odyssey as it continues in '007.

Another success story for 2006 was the Macau SAR, a boomtown by anyone's standards. Several large vendors set up shop in Macau this year, and Stefan Hammond's May cover story--"Macau: expansion drive"--was credited with helping him win the Best Business Technology Journalist Award at Media Connect Asia's third annual IT Journo Asia Forum. Expect IT interest in Macau to skyrocket in '007 as more infrastructure, labor and capital head towards the former Portuguese colony.

Casting the spotlight beyond the pages of the magazine, the 2006 Computerworld Hong Kong Awards once again recognized the leading products and vendors in Hong Kong as voted for by the readers of CWHK. Readers and vendors should look out for the '007 Awards later in the summer.

The Year of the Pig will bring a number of changes to Computerworld Hong Kong.

Expect more special issues with one issue looking at the quality of your workplace-is your IT workplace the best or worst in Hong Kong? We want you to tell us. Also look out for more events as we have storage and security conferences lined up for '007, as well as an ongoing stream of CIO discussions.

It all amounts to more value and more knowledge in helping you deliver on your daily responsibilities and in developing your technology careers.
