Twelve South releases updated BassJump 2 subwoofer

Mac accessory maker has released , an updated version of its original, USB-powered subwoofer. You won't find many changes to the hardware from ; instead, all updates in this version are software-based.

For those unfamiliar with the BassJump, the device adds extra bass and midrange frequencies to the speakers built into the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, creating a more professional, full-bodied sound system. It's a 2.2-inch tall, 5-inch square that weighs only 1.4 pounds--perfect to carry around in a laptop bag or while traveling. The minimalist device connects to your MacBook with just a single USB cord.

The updated BassJump 2 is now compatible with third-party USB speakers as well as . You can save BassJump settings, and the device can get up to eight decibels louder than its predecessor. The new software also includes user interface tweaks that, according to Twelve South, make the device easier to use. From the software's Preferences pane, you can adjust the volume and crossover frequency, as well as customize the sound to fit the style of music you are listening to, from rock to R&B.

The BassJump 2 is available for $80 from the ; its software requires Mac OS 10.5 or later. While the device is designed for MacBooks, it is also compatible with the iMac and Apple Displays. Owners of the original BassJump can upgrade to BassJump 2 for free by downloading the .
