Minecraft Up for 6 European Games Awards

Video games awards are often a fairly predictable affair -- if there's anything with Mass Effect or Assassin's Creed in the title you can pretty much guarantee they're going to pick up a significant number of awards, and titles from Rockstar usually perform well, too. But there's often not a lot of love for independently-developed titles -- there's sometimes a single indie category to honor them, but for most of the awards ceremonies it's a battle of the big hitters.

Not so with this year's European Games Awards. Minecraft and Notch's indie studio Mojang are up for six separate awards, making the game one of the most highly-performing indie titles in recent memory -- unsurprising, given its large and dedicated online community.

For the Best European Game category, Minecraft rubs shoulders with DiRT 3, The Witcher 2, Football Manager 2011, Crysis 2, Magic: The Gathering Duels of the Planeswalkers, Outland and Killzone 3. In the Best Indie Game category, Minecraft is up against Amnesia, Interstellar Marines: Running Man, Ilomilo and Snuggle Truck. In Best Online Game, it's pitted against Wakfu, Stronghold Kingdoms, EVE Online, Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword, Magicka, Black Prophecy, Runes of Magic and World of Tanks. For Best Game Design, Minecraft takes on Ilomilo, The Witcher 2, Amnesia, Bulletstorm, R.U.S.E. and Outland. And finally, the game also finds itself nominated for Best Browser Game alongside Battlestar Galactica Online, Cultures Online, Dragon Age Legends, Interstellar Marines: Running Man, Might & Magic Heroes Kingdoms, Miramagia, SkyRama, The Settlers Online and Travian.

Mojang itself is up for Best European Studio in the illustrious company of 2K Czech, BlueByte, CD Projekt RED, Crytek, DICE, Lionhead, People Can Fly, Quantic Dream and Remedy.
