AOL unplugs 10,000 servers, saves $5 million

30.03.2012
Due to a reporting error, Wednesday's story, "AOL unplugs 10,000 servers, saves $5 million," as well as the update that ran on Thursday, gave an incorrect figure for the amount of carbon emissions that AOL eliminated. The correct figure is almost 20 tons.

The fourth paragraph in both the original story and the update has been corrected on the wire and now reads as follows:

AOL decommissioned 9,484 servers last year, or about a quarter of its servers worldwide, the Institute said. Its savings included $1.65 million in energy bills, $2.2 million in OS licenses and $62,000 in hardware maintenance costs. It also gained $1.2 million from scrap and resale, and reduced its carbon emissions by almost 20 tons.
