Short messaging service (SMS) or text messaging applications created by Manila-based Chikka Asia Inc. are increasingly gaining popularity among Latin Americans, according to the wireless application service provider.

In Ecuador, a local version of "TxtBack," an application that allows mobile users lacking prepaid credit to reply to SMS for free as the sender shoulders the cost of the recipient's reply has registered millions of transactions this year.

On the other hand, another application, "TxtCollect," which allows subscribers without prepaid credit to send text messages was released in the same market, with even more encouraging results, says Gio Bacareza, Chikka director for the Americas.
