"While I have not yet identified a tablet that will meet my personal needs I anticipate wonderful possibilities from iPad 2.0 and others," Milman said.

The army of new tablets with Android and Microsoft OSes will provide users more choice, and will influence buying decisions, said David Daoud, research director at IDC.

"What you're going to see is ubiquitous availability of Android-type products across the board," Daoud said.

There will be inexpensive Android tablets based on a very simple software platform, and high-end tablets with the latest hardware and software features such as geolocation and gaming.

Earlier this week, Google announced its application store was hosting 100,000 applications. But Apple holds a significant advantage, with 250,000 applications.
