Stratacache announces OmniCast for Microsoft SMS2003

'The two big functions we see are for customers who are doing zero-day patches and zero-day updates -- critical updates that have to go out right now,' Riegel said. 'And secondly, we're seeing a lot of pull for the solution in the Vista environment where customers who are getting ready to deploy, or are deploying, early releases of Vista -- because of the size of the update being three gigs, four gigs, five gigs, it's absolutely critical they have more efficient distribution at the wide area.'

There is a need for OmniCast for SMS2003 in the enterprise, said Andi Mann, a senior analyst at Enterprise Management Associates in Boulder, Colo.

'The problem at the moment is when you're distributing [patches and software updates] you've got to have SMS service out in all the locations you're distributing to,' Mann said. 'OmniCast for SMS is going to reduce bandwidth, which makes the rollout a lot faster for people because it's doing this multicast, which SMS doesn't do. You basically can get a copy of the upgrades out to desktops across the enterprise a lot faster because it's sending less data -- it's sending one copy and then reusing it multiple times rather than sending multiple copies.'
