Philippines sees better education as solving staff woes

The school took in as consultant the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET Inc.) -- an accreditor of English and technology programs based in the United States -- to assess its courses on Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE), Computer Engineering (COE), and Computer Science (Com Sci).

Vea said IT graduates would certainly be hired based on their technical expertise first, but added that aside from this, they need to learn other skills in order to compete in the global market.

CICT reported that the Philippines would experience an 'employee shortage' instead of a job shortage beginning this year until 2010 with the influx of cyberservices jobs. The projected shortfall is based on the increasing demand for cyberservices jobs which is outstripping the supply of graduates. The low acceptance rate of applicants for cyberservices jobs, as well as varying interest levels of workers were also cited by CICT as contributory factors.
