Philippine gov't agency adopts wireless kiosks

25.10.2006
The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), in partnership with Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), will roll out wireless kiosks nationwide that will allow the state agency's 1.5 million members to transact online.

GSIS is set to launch Thursday G-W@PS, or GSIS Wireless Application System, an initiative that aims to deploy a total of 3,000 unmanned transaction kiosks in all over the country by next year.

The first of these kiosks will be inaugurated in Camiguin Island in the South.

The GSIS kiosk will consist of an ATM-like machine with a touch-screen monitor where members may do transactions such as salary loan inquiries and applications, retirement claims, and other information services.

Through this kiosk, a GSIS member may electronically file a loan application.

These machines will be connected to the GSIS network via PLDT's WeRoam service, which uses the latter's GPRS network.
