Singapore"s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has successfully deployed Veritas NetBackup as part of the university"s eLearning backup recovery services plan and Storage Area Networks (SAN) initiatives.

The mission critical eLearning service called edveNTUre, is used on a daily basis by a campus community of 24,258 students and 1,367 professors.

NTU relies on Veritas NetBackup to protect over 2 terabytes (TB) of mission critical data residing in their high-end servers running on Unix, Linux and Windows. Veritas NetBackup software helps NTU consolidate resources, improve performance, and remove the data protection footprint off its business critical systems.

"EdveNTUre is built on a dynamic and unpredictable eLearning environment that evolves and facilitates change," said Associate Professor Daniel Tan, director, Centre for Educational Development, NTU.

"NTU needs a storage solution that is reliable and easy to use, especially with the university"s viral storage growth estimated at 2T bytes per year. The adoption of a robust and centralised storage solution will allow us to efficiently and effectively manage the repository of reusable learning content with zero downtime," said Tan.

To meet these requirements, the campus needed a stable and intelligent tool to simplify the backup and recovery of all parts of the database, including archived re-do logs and control files.

With the high intensity of usage by the large staff and student population coupled with the speed of e- and m-learning adoption within the university, this comes as a much-needed tool to increase the university"s eLearning services" availability, explained Prof Tan.

Veritas" wide range of highly-scalable solutions also provided the technology roadmap for NTU to grow and build on its SAN plans, he added.
