New Metal Gear Arcade details: 16-player combat, 3D tech

11.06.2009
Amongst the many announcements that Hideo Kojima and crew brought to this year's , one of the more peculiar (but totally awesome!) games revealed was Metal Gear Arcade. In the latest issue of Famitsu, Metal Gear Online producer Yoshikazu Matsuhara and Metal Gear Arcade producer Satoshi Uchiyama revealed that the game is an arcade reworking of the online multiplayer, but isn't quite what you'd expect.

The game intends to transcend the PS3 counterpart, by offering players a full arcade-style gaming experience, topped off with a set of 3D glasses that comes attached to the cabinet. Inside the sit-down cabinet, players will find a 5.1 surround sound system, a special controller that allows for separate movement and viewpoint controls, and of course, the aforementioned 3D glasses.

Players will be able to fight within a 16-player combat arena, against both live and CPU opponents. You'll even find an improved character customization system in the game, as well as a mission mode that allows players the option of either solo or co-op play.

Metal Gear Arcade is expected for release in Japanese arcades later this year. Let's hope it sneaks its way over to U.S. shores sometime in the near future.
