HP pushes photo printing for home, small-office users

Hewlett-Packard is hoping to increase ink-jet photo-printing activities among home users as well as small-office home-office (SOHO) businesses in the country by promoting a new technology called 'scalable printing technology' (SPT).

In a recent press briefing, Bernadette Nacario, HP Philippines' imaging and personal printing systems group head, explained that SPT is the firm's next step in its business transformation. 'It will unlock new market opportunities and further growth in our printer business as it creates a new perspective and experience around printing in the home, in the office, and for the entire industry needing digital prints.'

Under the SPT platform, printhead components are fabricated as one unit via a photolithographic process, rather than welded together in post-production. This results in the precise alignment of the chamber, nozzles, and heating element, which then improves the accuracy of ink drop placement. The design also supports an increased density of nozzles, with 3,900 nozzles or more on a single printhead. More nozzles and increased dot placement accuracy translates into faster, high-quality prints. Additionally, the new printing system ensures that users will never run out of ink mid-page -- eliminating a source of wasted ink and paper.

The SPT platform can produce 4x6 photos in 14 seconds, enabling small and medium-sized businesses to print at up to twice the speed and 30 percent lower cost-per-page than other color laser printers, officials claimed.

'A major and common complaint among home users and SOHOs is that photo printing is expensive to do at home as well as slow and complicated,' said Nacario. 'The basic target of SPT-enabled printers is to address these problems, making photo printing faster and more cost-effective.'

Nacario noted that SPT would target only a select market, particularly customers that require large-volume printing production for brochures, flyers, and other marketing materials.
