Gaining digital direction via social networks

05.09.2006

The reality of the Internet is that it is open to anyone. Users who adhere to the 'code' of a virtual community and share files, download software and pass on information risk unnecessary exposure. What appeared to be a technically attractive and sophisticated way of digital interaction can open someone up to risk.

The virtual environment is no more or less risky than the physical world. Since anyone can initiate a peer-to-peer networking situation and there is little or no control of what is posted and available on some Web sites, the general rule for parents is to implement control mechanisms to regulate the surfing habits of their children.

This includes personal firewalls, anti-virus solutions and the option to register with companies that focus on the regulation of Web site and related content.
