Aussie businesses don't 'get' Garnaut Review implications

Australian Computer Society president, Kumar Parakala, said Australia was still in the infancy of greenhouse gas reporting and needs more action to complement the large amount of conversation on the issue.

"There is a lot of talk, I think we want to see some practical action in this space," he said.

In a recent Green IT paper, the ACS asked the government to consider ICT as its own sector to be audited and quantified in terms of its carbon emissions.

"Now the government seems to be unclear as to whether ICT should be a sector or not, which is not in our view the right approach. We believe that ICT is a very well established structure and the government should actively consider having targets established for various sectors, including ICT, for reduction in carbon emissions."

One aspect of the Garnaut Review that was particularly welcomed by the ACS, was its recommendation that 20 percent of revenue raised from fixed price permits in the carbon trading scheme be directed into research & development and commercialization of low emission technologies.
