Amazon acquires publisher Avalon to boost own content

Amazon.com has acquired publisher Avalon Books, in a deal that gives the online retailer publication rights to over 3,000 backlist titles in the romance, mystery, and Western genres, the company said Monday.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

The arrangement with Avalon will add to Amazon.com's original content both in print and digital format.

Ellen Bouregy Mickelsen, publisher of Avalon Books, will be assisting Amazon.com for several months to help secure e-book amendments for older titles whose digital rights are not owned by Avalon, Amazon.com said.

Amazon.com said that none of the titles involved in the deal were previously released in e-book form.

The company signed a deal last December to acquire over 450 titles from Marshall Cavendish Children's Books. It also acquired in April from Ian Fleming Publications a ten-year license for North American rights to the entire list of James Bond books by Ian Fleming in print and e-book.
