NZ broadband uptake surges as regulatory issues vanish

Broadband subscriptions in New Zealand increased by nearly 30 percent in the six months ended 30 September 2006, according to Statistics New Zealand.

There are now 1.4 million Internet subscribers in New Zealand. Dial up connections fell by 5.1 percent from the end of March 2006, while broadband numbers lifted from nine in every 100 people to 14.7.

Of those subscribers, 97.6 percent have a data cap on their plans, however, and two thirds have a cap less than 5G bytes.

Statistics also reports regulatory issues have diminished as a concern for local Internet service providers. 34 percent fewer reported the regulatory environment had been a barrier to growth. The number of ISPs (Internet Service Providers) in New Zealand remained unchanged at 57.

In June, New Zealand jumped from 22nd place in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development for broadband adoption to 19th, Statistics New Zealand said.
