CA revises performance tool

CA Inc.'s Wily Technology Inc. division last week introduced a new version of its Introscope software for monitoring and optimizing the performance of business-critical Web applications.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. in White Plains, N.Y., plans to adopt Version 7 of Introscope this summer, said Keith Kelly, vice president of Web technology at the hotel chain.

Starwood installed Version 6 of Brisbane, Calif.-based Wily's Introscope tool after an online reservation system launched in 2001 began crashing nearly every four hours, Kelly said. The Introscope installation fixed the problem, and the system now accounts for about 10 percent of all revenue, booking about US$1 billion in annual reservations.

Kelly said Starwood uses Introscope 6 on eight application servers for the Web-based reservation system and to monitor 32 Java virtual machines.

Kelly said he is interested in testing the new capabilities in Version 7, which offers expanded data views and can show how long it takes a user to get a Web response. Introscope 7 also provides tools for the automatic discovery, monitoring and triage of system problems, according to CA.

The CA release will be especially helpful for customers operating in service-oriented architecture environments, said Rich Ptak, an analyst at Ptak & Associates Inc. Pricing for the new version was not disclosed.
