Will the 3DS Price Cut Hurt Wii U?

While the recent is probably seen by most consumers as a good thing, especially since early adopters are getting 20 free games out of the deal, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata sees the potential negative impact the decision may have on Nintendo's future.

In a transcript of the financial results meeting for Nintendo, Iwata said, "With regard to the influence on the Wii U, what we have to take most seriously is that the price markdown could damage the trust of the consumers who bought the Nintendo 3DS just after the launch."

While the Wii did earn a lot of consumer trust by maintaining it's $250 price point for years after launch, it was also arguably a much more conservatively priced system. The 3DS was too expensive (as Iwata also concedes in the Q&A), but that doesn't mean people will wait for the Wii U to drop in price before buying the system. As long as it starts out affordable and comes with a steady stream of good games, then Nintendo won't have anything to worry about.

Outside of info that leaks out, don't expect to hear much more about the Wii U until 2012. Iwata said, "Since the Wii U we showed you at the E3 show in June was still in the development phase without very specific proposals on the software titles, we are going to announce the release date and the price next year when we are able to explain the specific proposals."
