Why Your Network is Important

Sometimes, it takes a difficult event to realize how important those around you truly are.

As I write this blog post, I am exploring new career options. I left John Deere in January, looking for an opportunity in small business. Unfortunately, my experience was far less than what I hoped for, and I am now searching for a new opportunity to achieve my professional goals. I'll admit that this has been very difficult, but I am aggressively searching for new opportunities.

Times like this make me very thankful for the professional network I have developed over many years. Even when I worked for a large corporation, I made a point to attend events with professionals from other companies and industries. Not only did I enjoy hearing about other businesses, I also knew that I could help others. I was always ready with a good book recommendation, new friend to contact for a problem, or even a good weekend getaway spot. I figured that if I helped enough people, I would receive help if I ever needed it.

In 2009, I met a new resident who had moved to my hometown from Colorado. She did not know a soul, but she was very friendly, and eager to learn more about the area business environment. I made it a point to introduce her to everyone I could think of as she acclimated herself to the area. We have stayed in touch over the years and would always keep up on what was going on. When I started exploring new opportunities, she was one of the first people I contacted, and I interviewed with the company where she works.

Regardless of the final outcome of that process, my experience shows the power of sharing your expertise and contacts with your network. While sites like LinkedIn are important for professional networking, face-to-face conversation and help will never go out of style.

As finance professionals, we have a lot to offer others in our networks. Everyone is looking for new cost-saving tips or revenue-generating ideas, and cash flow is a topic that will never go out of style. Share what you know with others. You never know when you will receive help from someone when you least expect it -- or most need it.
