Why can't Linux crack the desktop?

Linux has so many positive attributes, there is a wonder why it is not on more desktops. You can't beat the price and it has fewer viruses than Windows. But why hasn't it taken off?

According to Gartner, Linux will only be on less than 2% of desktops in five years. One consultant said the biggest obstacle to Linux taking off on desktops is its lack of applications.

One Network World reader fought back, saying: "At any point in time, most of the world is six months from Linux and Microsoft is six months from oblivion."
