Verizon Axes Unlimited Data but Eyes Family Plans

Days are numbered for unlimited data plans on Verizon airwaves but the next big thing may be family data plans.

Big Red will offer more data options, including the potential for family plans to help ease customers away from unlimited data plan pricing, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said at the .

Shammo equated the change to shared data to the company's earlier transition from individual minute plans to shared ones.

"I think it's safe to assume that at some point you are going to have mega-plans and people are going to share that mega-plan based on the number of devices within their family. That's just a logical progression," Shammo said in a .

As my PC World colleague JR Raphael pointed out in an , Shammo's statement was vague, non-specific and wasn't attached to any sort of time frame.

In other words, don't count on seeing these plans anytime soon.
