Terracotta upgrades Java job scheduler

Terracotta is unveiling on Tuesday version 2.0 of its Quartz Scheduler enterprise-level job scheduler for Java applications, featuring a Web-based GUI and the ability to direct jobs to specific machines.

Offering a time-based execution framework, Quartz enables jobs to be scheduled within Java applications, such as a batch job. Quartz has been commonly embedded in Java applications. The company also is introducing the Quartz 2.0 open source version of the product, with an easier-to-understand API that is also in the commercial Quartz Scheduler product.

"What Quartz 2.0 [features] is an upgraded API that makes it much easier to use, much simpler to understand the jobs that you're creating," said Steve Harris, vice president of engineering at Terracotta.

Featured in Quartz Scheduler is Quartz Manager, offering a Web-based GUI for monitoring and management of job scheduling, and Quartz Where, enabling direction of jobs to specific machines based on such factors as CPU and data availability. The open source product, however, does not feature the Manager or Where capabilities. Quartz Scheduler 2.0 is .

Terracotta would not release pricing for the product. Version 2.0 is the first version of Quartz since acquired it in November 2009 from project founder James House, a company representative said.
