Telstra leaks information from Tribe service

25.11.2010
Telstra (ASX:TLS) has admitted to leaking customer information from its Tribe service, blaming a fault in security for the accidental privacy breach.

, head of social media and online media relations, Kristen Boschma, said the service, which integrates a number of social media sites and SMS alerts, had been compromised.

"We found a fault in the security for our Tribe service," the blog post reads. "Some customers' pages could be accessed by other customers."

Boschma said Telstra uncovered the fault after being contacted by customers reporting that they had received a Tribe alert meant for another user.

Deeming the breach of privacy as "unacceptable", Boschma said the telco called of those affected and suspended Tribe while the problem was fixed.

"We suspended Tribe for a couple of days while we fixed it," she said. "It's now back up and working like it's meant to and we've already tried calling most affected customers directly. We're continuing to contact all remaining affected customers."
