Telstra, ANZ partner on ATM payphone

ANZ bank and Telstra have partnered to develop ATM and payphone kiosks under a pilot program across five suburbs in Melbourne, with the first kiosk being opened Tuesday in the Melbourne, Australia, suburb of Bentleigh.

The kiosks feature an ANZ ATM on one side, with the payphone on the other and will be piloted for the next six months. If successful, more kiosks will be rolled out.

John Rolland, Telstra executive director of customer sales and service, said the dual-purpose kiosks are a way of breathing new life into Telstra's payphones.

"The proliferation of mobile phones has certainly impacted on payphone use in recent years, so we are continually looking at ways of reinvigorating our payphone service and creating additional value for customers," Rolland said.

"We're hopeful that the latest pilot will help us identify new ways to save costs and increase revenue, which in turn helps us maintain more payphones for the community's use."

Jenny Fagg, ANZ managing director of consumer finance, said the pilot is modelled on multi-functional payphone kiosks as used in the United Kingdom, and the bank approached Telstra with the concept two years ago.
