Thailand's largest Telco, TOT, has chosen converged network firm 3Com to provide the network communications infrastructure at the Bangkok Government Centre, which will connect 30,000 government employees.

3Com Asia Pacific vice president and general manager Peter Chai said that it had been awarded a major part of the 323 million Thai Baht (US$9.6 million) tender for the 40,000-port local area network (LAN), scheduled to be installed during the next few months, making it one of the largest networks of its kind in the region.

"Once installed, the network would connect several buildings within the complex, covering a total area of 929,800 square meters and servicing 30,000 employees in 33 departments," said Chai.

Energy efficient work area

Chai said that the ministry of finance started the Bangkok Government Centre project in 2003 to house 28 government agencies and to provide superior energy efficiency and quality of life for government employees.

"The project involves the extensive deployment of 3Com advanced network solutions including the 3Com®Switch 5500-EI family of stackable Gigabit switches and the Switch 9500 series of 10-Gigabit multi-service core routing switches," he said.
