The number of technology job vacancies in Singapore more than doubled from 2,100 to 5,700 between 2004 and 2005, fuelled by an increase in demand for higher-end value-added jobs and qualified technology manpower. The 2005 figure represented 28 percent of total private sector vacancies for the year.

These were the findings of the latest technology manpower survey carried out by the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore.

Going forward, the overall demand for technology manpower is expected to rise at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.4 percent between 2006 and 2007, with the highest growth expected in areas such as technology research and development (CAGR 8.9 percent), digital media (8.7 percent) and Web development (eight percent). The survey found that employed technology manpower grew by 3.1 per cent from 108,000 in 2004 to 111,400 in 2005 ' its highest level yet.

'The survey results reflect a positive outlook for the technology industry, with an increase in demand for manpower in many areas,' noted Chan Yeng Kit, chief executive officer of IDA Singapore.

In 2005, the highest numbers of employed technology professionals were in technical support (31 percent), programming and software design (17 percent), and technology sales and marketing (14 percent).

Incidentally, technical support also topped the list of job categories with the highest number of vacancies, with 25 percent of the distribution. It was followed by programming and software design (24 percent) and database design and administration (14 percent).
