SWG Closing on December 15

24.06.2011
If you're a current player of Star Wars Galaxies, you may have already seen bearing the bad news that Sony Online Entertainment and LucasArts have decided to close down Star Wars Galaxies on December 15 of this year.

According to SOE president John Smedley, speaking with , the decision to close the game had nothing to do with the recent SOE hacks and layoffs -- it is "first and foremost a business decision mutually agreed upon between SOE and LucasArts." The contract between SOE and LucasArts runs out next year, anyway, and The Old Republic will likely be something of a focus for the Lucas team.

Smedley says that the closure of the game is not affecting SOE staffing -- the team is being transferred on to an "undisclosed new project in Austin."

The current Star Wars Galaxies community will be able to take advantage of some special Fan Appreciation offers in the coming months, and the team is planning a "galaxy-ending in-game event" in December. Further details will be forthcoming in the next few months.
