McNealy, who co-founded Sun Microsystems in 1982 and became known as an open source champion, has been replaced as the company CEO by Jonathan Schwartz, formally the president and chief operating officer position at Sun.

According to Thompson, McNealy is, in fact, not stepping down but he continues to be chairman of the board and even steps us as chairman of Sun Microsystems Federal Inc., which is more like the sales arm of Sun.
