Sophos Brings Data Loss Prevention

Sophos has announced the introduction of its content-aware Data Loss Prevention (DLP) technology, to simplify how companies mitigate against accidental data loss. By seamlessly integrating DLP into the new release of Sophos Endpoint Security and Data Protection (ESDP), Sophos claims it can offer Indian businesses greater control over sensitive data without any additional licensing costs.

"IT administrators need to protect customer and employee information, but they lack the funds to invest in new technology" said Altaf Halde, Country Director, Sophos India. "Data protection is a hot topic. If companies don't take it seriously, they face public humiliation - not to mention fines. According to a report by Forrester, the loss of a single record can cost an average of Rs 8,000 (US$173). The financial risk to a company with 10,000 records is more than Rs.8 million," he added.

In addition to integrated data loss prevention, Sophos ESDP simplifies cross-platform security, the company said. Enhanced application and device control capabilities, such as setting the permissions for removable storage - including USB sticks, external hard disks and wireless connection technologies (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Infrared) - is also included. IT administrators can centrally set group security policies as well as choose from a number of reports, which address compliance reporting requirements, via the Enterprise Console dashboard.

"With 25 years experience doing security, Sophos is no stranger to content and context scanning," continued Halde. "This is the exact same technology Sophos uses to look for sensitive data. The data protection industry has taken a very different approach, insisting on using unique agents and separate management structures. This only serves to complicate the process for the IT administrator. Sophos' holistic approach is simpler, cheaper and much more compelling," he concluded.
