Sony resists PlayStation 3 price cut

16.03.2009
Sony, once a dominant leader in the console wars, is under pressure to reduce the retail price of consoles to as much as US$100 less than the current price, reports . Declining sales over the past few months and the risk of losing development funds to Nintendo's console have been contributing factors to the imminent price reduction. Typically, developing games for Microsoft and Sony are more costly, and game developers are turning their focus to the current top-selling console over other options.

Although data collected by the NPD shows that a price reduction has an immediate impact on increasing sales and profitability, Sony's exclusive titles for the PS3, including the recent and other multimedia deals with movies and television shows has been beneficial says Peter Dille, the senior vice president of marketing for Sony in Foster City. According to Dille, there are still no immediate plans to cut the price of PS3 consoles.
