Philippines gov't encourage SMBs to use technology

The Philippines' Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) is going against the traditional notion that advanced ICT deployment is limited only to large multinational firms, as it starts to eye the small-and-medium sized enterprise (SME) sector for higher technology deployment.

In his keynote presentation during Computerworld Philippines' Technologies for SMEs Executive Briefing, Raul Rodriguez, CICT consultant for SMEs, pointed out that the commission has devised a program, which will aid micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to be active users of ICT by year 2010.

'The ICT Blueprint for MSMEs aims to help increase the global competitiveness of MSMEs through the proper use of ICT by 2010,' said Rodriguez.

'Every company, no matter how small has to start somewhere in making their presence felt globally. ICT can aid them to do that without costing an arm and a leg,' said Rodriguez.

He said several MSMEs have started by simply deploying e-mail facilities, followed by the creation of its own Web site. E-commerce and e-business have soon followed, then an internet working among organizations though the Internet, which eventually creates a digital ecosystem.

A project of the CICT and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the ICT blueprint is also aligned with the National SME agenda to push greater access to financing, markets, and new technologies for SMEs.
