Oracle Corp. Wednesday launched its new content management software.

As expected, the company unveiled Files 10g, part of the Oracle Collaboration Suite product line, at the OpenWorld user conference in San Francisco. The application, whose underlying architecture is the 10g Database and Application Server, contains file management, security and event-driven workflows, Oracle said.

The support for Web services will help developers link it to other applications. In addition, end users throughout the enterprise can easily exploit the software through personalized interfaces, the company said. Oracle also announced that the Collaboration Suite would support voice and instant messaging communications, boosting existing Web conferencing functions.

During a question-and-answer session, Executive Vice President Chuck Rozwat said the integration of instant messaging into the suite -- and ensuring it had things such as a common installation process with the rest of the platform -- was a "big job" that took longer to complete than Oracle originally expected. He also said that over the past year, Oracle has actively worked to balance its efforts between improving the 11i E-Business Suite and its technology stack.

Some observers have said Oracle has allowed its applications business to languish at the expense of the infrastructure products. But Rozwat said Oracle has done a "balanced job" in supporting each product line, with both getting a healthy amount of development resources. He pointed out that the latest version of 11i.10, Oracle has more user interfaces in the E-Business Suite, and the product has considerable depth, with around 50 modules.

Beyond just mentioning the application suite in executive keynotes, Oracle has worked on additional marketing and visibility efforts for the software, Rozwat added. "We"ve done a good job balancing them out," he said.
