November 2008 NPD sales figures: Everyone wins

12.12.2008
The video game industry is looking hale and hearty, according to newly released NPD Group sales figures. Despite a souring economy, North American game sales for November 2008 are 10% higher than November 2007 -- an impressive achievement.

Saying that "all three of the newer generation console systems have something to brag about," NPD analyst Anita Frazier reports robust November game sales for the Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 3. In fact, game sales were up 10% over November 2007, itself a hugely successful month.

Hardware sales were strong, too. The Wii and DS, of course, continued their domination of the sales charts. But the Xbox 360 showed strong sales, and even the PlayStation 3 hardware sales are up 60% year-to-date.

Translation? Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony are all performing well. This fact led NPD analyst Frazier to proclaim that "it's clear there can be more multiple victors this generation." Frazier added that price was still a "strong factor" for console sales, but that "the most important factor [for 2009] will be the line-up of compelling games that will keep consumers involved in the industry."
