No, You Can't Delete Save Data in Resident Evil 3DS

27.06.2011
It's become a common practice to have a "DELETE EVERYTHING?!" option in video games that come in a cartridge based format. After all, you don't want anyone to see the ridiculous names you gave to your farm animals in Harvest Moon -- or worse, the giant penises you drew all over your WarioWare: D.I.Y. mini-games. Capcom, however, may be changing things up with its marquee titles, as seen with the latest Resident Evil.

So far, no one's actually asked Capcom why you can't delete save data in , but such a move seems to discourage reselling it to trade-in stores. Oddly enough (or not), this single feature (or lack of) tanked used sales of the game in Japan. :

There's speculation that Capcom deliberately made it impossible for users to delete their save data to discourage used game sales -- since those who buy Mercenaries 3D used can't wipe the save and start over from the beginning, some Japanese shops will only pay very low prices (as low as $6!) for pre-played copies.

So, it sounds like it's working for Capcom in Japan at least. But it's not a great way to reward the fans who just dropped $40 on your game...

Hmm. It'll be interesting to see how GameStop prices pre-played copies of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, especially considering that used buyers will likely be buying an already completed game. Then again, I'm sure GameStop won't let a thing like that alter their rigid price scale.
