New Zealand"s online advertising spend grew 87.5 percent in 2004 to NZ$15 million (US$10.9 million), according to Advertising Standards Authority figures. The ASA numbers show that online ad spend shot past cinema that year, which only managed an increase from NZ$12 million to NZ$13 million.

For the first time ever, the ASA recorded over NZ$2 billion spent on advertising in a single year.

Spending on advertisements in newspapers and magazines also grew slightly, but apart from online, all other media recorded static or declining portions of the total ad spend.

Online advertising remains a relative minnow in the market, however, with only 0.7 percent of the total share.
