Mentor and protégé

YB Yeung, former regional CIO and assistant general manager at HSBC, has 37 years of IT management experience in Hong Kong.

After retirement, Yeung continued to share his knowledge as Professor at City University. His contribution was recognized with the Hong Kong Computer Society's 2012 ICT Lifetime Achievement Award. Yeung talked with CWHK about his career milestones and mentors.

YB Yeung (YY): I graduated from Hong Kong University's Electrical Engineering program in 1969 and my dream was to design transistor radios. But fate brought me into HSBC.

My priority back then was to get a job and bring income for the family. I came from a very simple family and my university education was fully supported by a scholarship. My father worked in the jewelry business and his income was $120 per month. HSBC offered $1200 per month, so I naturally went for that.

HSBC's IT program had just started to hire local university graduates. When I joined the program, we were learning very low level programming languages and using IBM machines. I had to start everything from scratch and my trainer was Dennis Yeung, who later became Oracle's managing director, taught me all the basic assembler programs and how macro works.
