Major events to mark Philippines ICT Month

With 'ICT for All' as theme, the Philippines will celebrate its 2nd ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Month this June with several major events lined up throughout the month, most of them to be held in Quezon City'declared as the ICT Capital of the Philippines and the host city for this year's celebrations.

Kicking off the month-long celebration will be the 1st National ICT Summit that will be held on June 5 at the Crowne Plaza Galleria with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as the guest of honor and keynote speaker. The President is expected to make a formal announcement regarding her policy directions for the ICT industry. She is also expected to open the ICT Exhibit 2006.

Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) Commissioner Damian 'Dondi' Mapa, who is also chairman of the second national ICT Month 2006, said the 1st National ICT Summit is the culmination of a series of consultative forums on the Philippine ICT Roadmap conducted by the CICT with the various sectors of the ICT industry.

On June 6 to 7, the 11th ICT Professionals' Congress will be held, also at the Crowne Plaza Galleria in the Ortigas Center. The conference is organized by the Philippine Computer Society (PCS) in cooperation with the Quezon City government (QCLGU), the CICT, and the Quezon City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCCI) Foundation, together with local IT school Systems Technology Institute (STI).

Elena 'Bing' Primicias Van Tooren, president of PCS, said the congress would focus on mobile commerce and wireless technology, and technology developments that are changing people's daily lives. 'The congress would help promote mobile commerce as an effective tool of social services and good governance,' she said.
