Lord of the Rings Online goes Free-to-Play next month

18.08.2010
Starting September 10, Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online massively multiplayer game goes free-to-play. What this means to existing subscribers is way more interesting than what it means to newcomers.

The free-to-play model LotR Online uses is a tiered system with VIP players and premium content that free players can buy "a la carte." For subscribers who already paid the lifetime fee, VIP status is automatic along with the 500 free Turbine Points to spend on stuff in the in-game Store -- however, they won't have to pay a monthly fee to get those points. Depending on time, balancing, and the tenacity of non-lifetime subscribers who shell out for VIP status, this could create some interesting balancing issues in the game.

We probably won't find out right when the free-to-play game goes live in September -- but check back in December. By then, things might get interesting at the higher levels.
